It’s my Dad’s birthday today, so in honor of that I drew his favorite Disney character, Dumbo.
Dumbo is really interesting, its a story of someone who is different and find that his difference makes him special, but it’s also a story of the people who believe in him. The people who look beyond appearance to find what other people and even Dumbo himself can’t see.
This film also has one of those Disney songs that never fail to wretch my heart. “Baby Mine” it’s always felt so lonely and melancholy, yet so tender and loving.

A WHOLE lot of Superman going on in my sketchbook today. Look for the final image in Monday’s Drawn This Way episode with @philliplight #superman #manofsteel #drawnthisway #sketches
I was going to save this for fanart friday but to heck with that!
The colors in all of the promotional art film just dazzle me. I loved the original Monsters INC it was my favorite Pixar film of the time and it still fascinates me to this day. I’m really excited to see this film and I really hope it’s the equal to the first.
Can I also gush on the building design for just a second? The main building is a perfect fusion of whimsical monster theme with teeth in the archway and angry eyes hidden as dome windows, but the way they blended it with real collegiate architecture is superb. They could have easily gone too Tim Burton with the style but they were able to find a way to show the monster world as a bright, normal and even cheerful place while still admitting that it is full of creatures learning to scare children for a living.
This is going to be a visually stunning film and I hope that the story is just as engaging as the visuals.

I was commissioned by Jen AKA @repoghost who makes the amazingly engaging webcomic Thunderpaw. This was such a fun image to work on. Its a character just now premiering in this current chapter.
Go on over to her comic and had a read, you won’t regret it, promise.
Also I’m open for commissions so send me a message here or via my email address reedblackillustrator@yahoo.com

Thank you, I try. Some of those pieces are from my school days others are new images. Picking and choosing the right images for a portfolio can be very difficult. Showing enough versatility while still being concise is an interesting tightrope to walk.
By the way, the website is a Wordpress theme by Organic Themes. It’s called Portfolio.
I worked on an image of The Emerald City of OZ for my Drawn This Way podcast and was really fond of it, so much so that I decided to do a panorama of the Marvelous Land of OZ.
The main lansmarks shown are The Wicked Witch of The West’s castle in Winkie country in the east. After that the Forest of the Gilkins in the North. Then the Emerald City in the middle of OZ. Followed by Munchkin land where Dorothy first landed in the East. Lastly Glinda’s castle in the Quadling country in the south.
